Suncorp quantifies Queensland recovery economic boost

Oct 30, 2011 Posted Under: Car Insurance Online

A new report commissioned by Suncorp reveals the insurer will stimulate the Queensland economy to the tune of $1.2 billion over a 10-year period through restoration and recovery work from this year’s natural disasters.

The Road to Recovery report, by Deloitte Access Economics, says Suncorp has created almost 3700 new jobs in the state and that 93% of the repair and rebuilding activities authorised by Suncorp have been carried out by local contractors, driven by the insurer’s local purchasing policy.

The report follows the recent Q3 Deloitte Access Economics Business Outlook which highlighted the beginning of a big rebound in Queensland growth, boosted by flood recovery expenditure and a surge in engineering work.

Suncorp Personal Insurance CEO Mark Milliner says the report was commissioned as part of a detailed review into the performance of the business following last summer’s events.

Electric Vs. Hydrogen – The Future of Driving

Oct 30, 2011 Posted Under: Insurance Help

Since the discovery that raising food crops like corn and soybeans for ethanol would not only cause food prices to sky rocket, but also produce more greenhouse gases than simply burning gasoline; the debate over environmentally friendly fuel sources for cars has centered on electric and hydrogen models. Each type of fuel has advantages and disadvantages, but the electric models seem to have beaten the hydrogen cars in the commercial market.

The Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt

The Nissan Leaf is a fully electric car with a range of about 73 miles. The Chevrolet Volt is a plug in hybrid which uses both battery and gasoline power and can travel about 50 miles on battery power alone.

Data released today by the U.S. Census Bureau on income, poverty and health insurance coverage revealed that 49.9 million Americans are uninsured, a slight increase from 49 million in 2009. According to Alan Baker, interim executive director of the American Public Health Association (APHA):

“Too many Americans lack health insurance. It’s a tragic situation exacerbated by slow economic growth, a high rate of unemployment and a broken health system that is still not meeting the health needs of our nation.”

One of APHA’s deepest concerns is the alarming decline of working Americans who have employer-based health insurance. New data reveals that only 55.3 percent have health coverage through their employer compared with 56.1 percent in 2009. Read more…

The survey, which was conducted in the car park of Pick n Pay Verulam in Durban on October 1, was the third leg of Bridgestones Tyre Check initiative for 2011.

Our tyre specialists checked 436 tyres on 109 vehicles for condition and pressure,” said Bridgestone Public Relations Manager, Mandy Lovell. “

I changed car locks after key stolen – but Churchill would not cover me

Oct 13, 2011 Posted Under: Car Insurance Online

My wife’s handbag, including items showing our address and car keys, was stolen. I was worried the thief could find the car so paid to have the locks changed. I claimed under the personal possessions section of my house insurance with Churchill but was turned down as Churchill regards car keys as vehicle accessories, which are excluded. My Churchill motor policy excludes keys lost outside the car. GC, Ashford, Kent

Churchill told you that keys were an accessory and not a personal possession, which is a peculiar interpretation that it now retracts. But the full exclusion reads “accessories and parts” and insurers commonly describe keys as parts.
